This fundraiser isn’t just about fitness; it’s a culminating project for the Communities 2 students, who have spent time studying the challenges veterans face when transitioning back to civilian life and learning about the vital work of Veteran Service Organizations (VSO). Students worked in groups and contacted local businesses and community members about sponsorship and participation. Students learned first-hand from veterans to learn about their experiences in the military and with different VSO’s in the community.
Communities Leadership teacher Gina Munig explained, “The students have a new appreciation for veterans. Having the opportunity to talk to different veterans and learn their stories is meaningful. It is inspiring to see our students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to make a tangible difference in the lives of our veterans.”
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Northeast Wisconsin Old Glory Honor Flight. This incredible organization transports local veterans to Washington, D.C., giving them a chance to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice—a truly life-changing trip.
“These flights give some veterans closure. When some returned after their wars, they were not treated with respect. I am grateful to be part of bringing this opportunity to more veterans. Our goal is to raise enough money to cover the cost of sending 11 veterans on their flight,” junior in Communities Caden Ames explained.
Communities alum Grace Munig, who attended an Old Glory Honor Flight last May 2025 as a guardian, said, “It was important to see these guys in their 80’s get excited. Getting these people out of the house and seeing them make new friends is really important. It bridges the gap between the generations with younger people. The guardians enjoy their days, too, and help make this a meaningful day for all. Some veterans downplay their roles. They sometimes need to still process their own trauma. There are others who went through what they did. It helps them to recognize what they contributed. They have made this a seamless process.”
