Lunar Moth is a three piece pop-grunge band out of Madison, Wisconsin. They have been around since 2019; the members being Amber Moth on vocals and guitar, Gage Moth on drums, and Mac Moth on the bass. Their most recent release from 2024 is an album titled Stranger, it gives off a powerful vibe because of the high-energy sound the majority of the album possesses. The inspiration of the album musically was to write the best music they had so far, while lyrically, “Stranger explored a lot of my insecurities. A huge running thread though the album is about feeling uncomfortable in your own skin, and talking about the ways I cope with that feeling. That major theme played a big role in the creation of the album artwork and title.” said Amber Moth.
Other releases consist of one other album, eleven singles, and two EP’s. Stranger also being the biggest project of the band, the music, artwork, and promotional videos really came together as a whole.
The influences of the band consist of a wide variety of music, films, and books. “I think a lot of our humor, especially in our videos, comes from things like old Monty Python sketches, and some of the more current absurdist comedians like Tim Robinson and Tim and Eric.” said Amber Moth. The band also shares a love and fascination for sci-fi media like Star Trek and the Twilight Zone. Musical influences across the group include bands from various genres like Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Black Sabbath, and Fall Out Boy.
A favorite place of the bands to perform is Gamma Ray, an independent venue in downtown Madison. “The atmosphere is great, they have karaoke every night after shows, the owners are fantastic people, and we always have a great time there.” said Amber Moth.
In the future, Lunar Moth would like to put in work to be able to play more festivals and tour overseas, but during the time of trying to reach that goal, they will be playing live shows and writing music whenever possible.
If anyone is up for an exciting trip to Kentucky, future gigs entail a trip down to Midwest Friends Fest in Newport Kentucky during late May, where Lunar Moth and numerous other artists like Kat and the Hurricane will be performing!
