Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, was released on March 20th. Falling into multiple genres, the film is primarily a horror comedy with a handful of gore and bloody scenes. Releasing seven years after the first movie, Ready or Not. The film is directed, once more, by Matt Bettinelli and Tyler Gillett, starring the returning bride, Samara Weaving.
The first movie follows Grace (Weaving) as she marries into her husband’s (Mark O’Brien) extremely wealthy and very cult-like family. After the wedding ceremonies, Grace is asked to pick a card and play a game. She ends up choosing Hide and Seek, not knowing that if she is found by her goat-killing in-laws, she too will end up like the goats in her husband’s family barn.
Outlasting every one of her new family members, Here I come, shows Grace exactly where she left off in the first movie, and then throws her straight into round two. This time she’s fighting side by side with her estranged sister, Faith (Kathryn Newton).
Similar to the Hunger Games:Catching Fire, Grace and Faith walk in the same footsteps of Katniss and Peeta. Both face more skillful and advanced players. These “players” for Grace and Faith consist of the twins, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shawn Hatosy and four other family ties. In regular Hunger Games fashion, the host of this game is the family lawyer (Elijah Wood), who makes sure everyone is aware of the rules and follows them.
With a 13-minute difference in runtime, I personally thought the first movie wasn’t as thoughtfully paced as the second. The first movie felt a bit rushed in scenes it didn’t have to be and the opposite in others.
Here I come, was brought with a more action-packed, exciting theme all while still harvesting a bit of the charm of the first movie.
I give it 3.5 stars out of 5.
