As the cold and lengthy winter is slowly coming to an end, the winter season sports are wrapping up their final events. The North Star thought it would be nice to take a more profound look into how this past season went for the players and coaches. So, we asked the Girls BBall, Boys Swim & Dive, Wrestling, and Gymnastics teams to answer some questions!
Read real responses from ONHS students and coaches below!
Did you have any hopes or goals coming into the season? If so, have you achieved it yet?
“For me being a freshman I just had the goal of getting a feel for high school, learning a lot, and improving myself along the way. I would say I have achieved my goal and had so much fun doing it.”
Raegan Batten, Freshmen, Girls Basketball
“I had hopes to go into sectionals, and I hit that goal this season”
Zayden Yenter, Sophomore, Boys Swim and Dive
Two goals that I had coming into the season were to become more confident with going inside the paint and wanting to become more confident overall. I would like to say I’ve achieved my goals, and I really am happy with my confidence.”
Evelyn Annamitta, Freshmen, Girls Basketball
“First goal is to be 3x conference champs, then sectional champs, and make it to state as a team”
- Kadi Hamer, Gymnastics Coach
Were there any highlights of your season?
“A swimmer breaking their personal record or mastering a new stroke technique is a huge highlight. It’s especially rewarding as a coach to witness their hard work pay off and feel like I played a small part in their development”
- Jake Zinsil, Boys Swim Team Assistant Coach
“Honestly the whole season! I love the coaches and my teammates, the atmosphere is amazing. You can tell everyone wants to get better and be there.”
Raegan Batten, Freshmen, Girls Basketball
“Yes, almost every time that we had a bus ride home, we blasted white girl music on my speaker and just sang along with it, and I will always remember how proud I am of Sawyer and how far he has come.”
David Tjugum, Senior, Boys Swim and Dive
Have you had to face any obstacles this season that you haven’t had to face before?
“Yes, I have had to learn that even if you are scared you should still do whatever it is that you want to do. My fear was always smacking on the water and being scared that I was going to hurt myself. With diving there is no way to teach or learn a new dive step by step. So you just have to do it or what our team says “huck it” And that’s the mindset that I have with everything now. Even if you are scared you should still do it anyway.”
Shepherd Johnson, Senior, Boys Swim and Dive
“Yes, I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the beginning of the season and I managed how to figure out how to cope with this throughout the season”
Sully Snow, Junior, Boys Swim and Dive
Is there anything you are/aren’t looking forward to in the end?
“For me, watching senior swimmers at the end of the season can feel bittersweet. It’s tough to say goodbye to athletes you’ve coached for years. I’ve built a strong bond with the team, that moment of transition can be hard.”
- Jake Zinsil, Boys Swim Team Assistant Coach
“I am looking forward to being able to focus more on my studies and having free time to work, play volleyball, and many other activities. However, I’m going to miss the memories I made, and it’ll make me look back at how much effort I put in to try and become better.”
Evelyn Annamitta, Freshmen, Girls Basketball
“Wish the season could never end”
- Miles Berg, Assistant Wrestling Coach
Last question, are you playing/coaching a spring sport?
