Awut Alic is a varsity basketball player in her sophomore year. She is currently ranked as one of Wisconsin’s top 5 players for the class of 2027 (Prep Girls Hoops). She is someone who is described as an “athletic phenom” and a competitor who wants to win. Her ability to constantly stay locked and focused during any game is superior. Alic, as of right now, holds 4 official Division 1 college offers.
Now that she is halfway through her high school basketball career, let’s take a peak at what she’s been up to these past couple of months.
A month into the season, Alic dropped 37 points against Green Bay Preble High, making that her highest-scoring game. As of recently, she scored 34 points against Chippewa Falls in the first regional game of the season.
Scoring is not the only thing Alic has proven to master. She has continued her legacy from her freshman year to being, once again, first in the Fox Valley Association (FVA) for having the most steals during a season. In addition, this year she picked up being first in assists as well as blocks.
As we reverse a bit, Alic shared in an interview that she is proud of her past season; she also stated, “I felt like I could have done a little bit more this season. I felt like I laid back a little, and that was disappointing.” She then explained that she likes to set herself to a higher standard and is focused on executing that next year.
Last summer, Alic played for the Wisconsin Blaze AAU team. Typically with AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) teams, you play within your age group. Something that was a little different for Alic this past year is that she played with their highest level team, which is 17U.
When the question was brought up of how she was playing 2 levels up. She commented that the coach had called her asking if she would want to play at the highest level. She initially said, “No. I was scared, you know? It was like something was holding me back.”
After more consideration, she changed her answer to yes.
Alic announced, “That was the best decision I ever made in my life.” She later on said that the time spent with the players and coaches taught her a lot about herself and basketball.
After her season with ONHS, she is resting up her body while still making sure to get her shots up on the court. She will return to her AAU team later on this spring and is excited to start playing again.
As for ONHS, you can catch Alic showing out during the team’s fall ball league, and of course the 2025-26 regular season.
