“Anyone But You” is the new star studded romance that leaves people skipping out of the theaters singing “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. While many films have become very cerebral and make audiences second guess themselves, leaving the weight of the movie on the viewer, “Anyone But You” sticks to a cliche plot line that utilizes a heavy dose of humor to give audiences the closure they sometimes need.
The first ten minutes of “Anyone But You” was a relief. Funny characters in awkward situations created an enthusiastic audience that couldn’t stop giggling. Between that and the on screen chemistry, the movie was destined for success.
“Anyone But You” follows most of the cliche romance tropes: fake dating and enemies to lovers. Bea and Ben meet at a coffee shop, vibe, and hang out for the night. They seem destined to fall in love, but when Bea overhears Ben bad-talking her, they turn into enemies. With the upcoming wedding of Bea’s sister and Ben’s best friend, they decide to act like a couple to spite their exes. However, they end up ruining the wedding. In their remorse, they fall in love, satisfying the audience’s desire for them to be together.
“Hangman’ from the most recent Top Gun movie and Syndey Sweeney from Euphoria honed in on the two characters’ irritation with the other leaving the audience leaving just even tension to have the viewer wanting more. Characters like Ben, Bea, and their family stay pretty flat throughout, but the dialogue redeems the otherwise bland characters. The film focuses more on the plot rather than having the characters be the star of the show.
The music choices in this film are top tier with the main song “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield that helps soothe Ben in times of distress. The song being over 15 years old brings a fun and familiar feel to the movie, which is now trending on tiktok, showing audiences dancing after seeing the movie just like I did and screaming “Unwritten”.
“Anyone But You” being just under two hours is an ideal time to have your mind escape from the real world without feeling like the film continues to drag on and on. The plot all throughout moves swiftly and is clear to the viewer, making it easy to follow along and be engaged for the full hour and 43 minutes.
A feel good romance is always in season and in my opinion always welcome. I rate this movie ⅘ stars and encourage anyone with a stressful life to head into the theaters and escape for a while.
