Almost 85% of Americans celebrate Christmas according to a holiday season survey by WalletHub, and buying presents for loved ones continues to get more and more expensive. Whether the holiday season brings you immense joy or stress, the costs have continued to rise leaving many people choosing to discard their gift-giving spirit entirely.
While some people blame themselves for this change, it’s truly all Santa’s fault.
Although Santa is oftentimes thought of as a jolly good-doer bringing joy to kids around the world, he has also bred generations of spoiled children with high expectations yearly. In spite of Santa’s clean track record, the red suit is filled with secrets. After kids don’t believe in Santa anymore there is still an expectation to buy presents for these little brat children.
Christmas season was originally about giving thanks to people in your community and spending time with your family. Now, it seems Christmas is filled with over sensationalized ideas of looking your best and impressing the people around you.
Bratty children don’t care about the feelings of those struggling to bring holiday cheer to their immediate family. Ultimately, they have high expectations, with parents feeling immense gift -giving pressure for the holiday season. Therefore, bratty children stole the Christmas cheer.
According to a survey done by WalletHub in 2023, 1 in 4 Americans have debt from last holiday season and although the season is about spending time with family, many Americans feel pressure from their kids’ gifts causing them to even go into debt. The excessive deals tied to Christmas demand makes people feel like they have to spend excessively.
The Christian holiday was originally about giving thanks to people in your community and spending time with your family. Now it seems Christmas is filled with over sensationalized ideas of looking your best and impressing the people around you. Despite the ‘true’ meaning of Christmas nearly half of all Americans say that their charitable giving is going to be affected by inflation. When it should be the opposite.
Wallet hub also stated that 35% of people find coming up with gift ideas is the most stressful part of the holiday shopping season.
Although many people rank their love for one another with monetarial value, over consumption feeds into this idea. People’s friendship can feel purely transactional, yet materials don’t stay with people till they die. It’s the memories and spending quality time with the people you love that impacts who you are.
When kids stop believing in Santa, instead of feeding into the bratty attitude and continuing to buy them presents, bury the fat guy in the red coat. Instead of giving gifts, spend more time with family and share your gratitude for your loved ones this holiday season.
