The Oshkosh North Dress Closet has been helping students find the perfect dress for them since 2014.
In 2014, Laura Benish, a student at Oshkosh North, founded the Dress Closet as a part of her Girls Scout Gold Award project. Partnering with the nonprofit Becca’s Closet, Laura’s goal was simple: making sure everyone could have a special night–whether they could afford a dress or not. Within two years she had given out 171 dresses to students.
In 2016 after Laura graduated, student Sonia Ochowicz took over the closet for her Girl Scout project. Once Sonia graduated she passed the responsibility on to Mrs.Bougie. Since then we’ve had many student volunteers form different clubs and communities. They have helped organize, steam, and move dresses to ensure that everything looks perfect. Even a handful of staff members have stepped up and donated time and materials to support the cause.
As of right now the Dress Closet has given out around 44 dresses between homecoming, winter formal, and prom. We hope to expect more being picked up in the next few weeks. Students from Oshkosh West, Lourdes, Omro, and Winneconne are also welcome to stop by to find their perfect look this prom season.
